Glass is as strong as wood, but costs as much as stone and can't be mined elsewhere. Its only redeeming quality is that it is transparent, which makes it good for building ceilings and nothing else. Even dropping the cost to one gold doesn't make it a worthwhile investment.
Hmm... we have sand and bloomeries... why not take a page from Minecraft's book and let us make our own glass? Sand's useless and iron is scarce enough that your bloomery will be inactive most of the time anyway.
