I submitted this idea originally on suggestions.I would've placed the idea here, had I realized it. (insert_face-palm here)

Death by drowning (accidentally) is a horrible way to die. I agree that the water should pose some form of a threat, however I also think that the player should be able to overcome that. The player should be able to purchase gear that will enable them to survive in the water, the item itself could be a perishable or not. Basically, the gear would act as a "safety net" should the player fatefully fall into the water. My belief is that the player would not start the game with the ability to swim, however if they "took the effort to do something (learn, buy or craft) they should be able to overcome the threat of drowning.

Other alternatives:
-Maybe the workers can rescue the player by throwing a (onetime use) floatation device (that you have to buy/craft). Or they can just use a pole to fish you out.

-Crappy little rafts that have a heath bar. (and can be damaged if shot)

-Someone mentioned water wings/floaty s.

A lot of people are asking for something like that, so I'll have probably to add something to deal with water. Emergency flotation device are nice, I have to say.

However, I don't want to break the game: If you can simply go through water, and if the monsters can't, it becomes too easy to secure your fortress.

Currently, the simpler way to deal with water is to always have a stair in your inventory. If you fall into water, you just need to build the stair and get out of the water.

And if you die in water, and if you play in coop, you can always have one of your friends coming to resurrect you.

I will wait for the players to give their opinion.

Repost from that thread

Flippers and Swimming Sleeves. Equippable in Armor/Boots slots. They let you swim, but make you take more damage/move slower, because you have to sacrifice normal Armor/Boots. You only need one, but getting both would give you swimming speed bonus? Or, Sleeves allow you to idle in water (you don't drown if you don't move), while Flippers give you more speed, but if you don't move for several seconds you'll start drowning?
Also swimming goggles, so you can dive? Underwater chests and treasures? Whole archipelag/lake/sea map generators? Possibilities.

The ability to swim even after it possibly being a hard to obtain item would still particularly ruin the game for me. The water is a great fear in this perma death world that I would enjoy if it sticked around.

HOWEVER I much rather prefer the idea suggested in this thread.

this is a great idea, though the fear of water is a driveing force in the game. do not make it easy to do.

also make it so water pools have depths to them if u do this. plus it could then also flood tunnels witch would make the game more challenging and fun.

When I build near water and the enemies start tunneling, I agree that water depth would really be something to fear.

I like B&D because of it's unique. The game is fine the way it is. If swimming had to be added, the player should still take damage, albeit less.
